V London Festival of Queer Spanish Culture presents A FREE MAN (Un Hombre Libre) directed by Laura Hojman.
Agustín Gómez Arcos was renowned as a playwright in 1950s Madrid, but the modernity and freedom of his work led to him being censored and forced into exile. In 1970s France he became a successful, critically acclaimed novelist, but remained largely unknown in Spain. His novels were translated into more than twelve languages and were included in French high school curricula, and he was a finalist for the Goncourt Prize on six occasions.
Gómez Arcos chose not to remain silent but keep alive the memory of those defeated by the Franco regime. His success, his public interventions and his ideas reveal a progressive man who was ahead of his time on issues such as democratic memory, feminism and gender and sexual identity. A FREE MAN explores these themes through the testimonies of such dissident artists as Pedro Almodóvar, Paco Bezerra, Marisa Paredes, Alberto Conejero, Bob Pop and Lara Moreno, among others, as it reflects on the recent history of Spain through silences, lost stories and the role of culture and memory.
Following the screening multi-award winning screenwriter, producer and director Laura Hojman will be in conversation with Jorge Gárriz, director of V London Festival of Queer Spanish Culture.
This film is in Spanish with English Subtitles, the Q&A will be in English / Esta película está en español con subtítulos en inglés, la sesión de preguntas y respuestas será en inglés.
