Clapton Beauty Parlour

Hackney’s oldest hairdresser, trading in Clapton since 1930.

Get to know us

Clapton Beauty Parlour on Lower Clapton Road is one of Hackney's oldest hairdressers, which has been going since March 1930.

Opened by 20-year-old newlyweds Jean and Emanuel Manning. During the Second World War, young hairdresser Vidal Sassoon used the salon to see clients after his Whitechapel salon was bombed.

Current owner Dawn Hammond started here as a part-time Saturday girl washing people’s hair at 15 in the 1980s - her first job out of school and took over the business in 2018. More than 40 years later, she's still here and the parlour remains a vital place for a haircut, a chat and a catch-up. She rents out some of the chairs to Jamelia, a specialist black hairdresser for braids and locs, as well as Tracey Urban Beauty, a beautician with a room for facials, waxing, and massages.
