Much like in any big city, safety is an important aspect to consider when planning your journey. Whether you’re travelling solo, meeting a regular group, or partying with friends, it’s a good idea to take some precautions so you can enjoy your time and stay safe.

Tips for staying safe

  • Plan your return journey

It’s a good idea to plan your return journey before you travel by checking the time of your last train, bus or tube back home. If in doubt, speak to TFL, the venue or organiser.

  • Enjoy safe nights out

Don’t leave drinks unattended or accept them from strangers. Be aware of strangers being over-friendly in bars, clubs and large gatherings. It’s better to stick to well-lit and busy streets if possible. Check up on your friends by phone or text to make sure they got home safely and vice-versa.

  • Be aware of your surroundings

When it comes to staying safe in Hackney, the best advice is to be cautious and use your common sense. If something doesn’t feel right, walk away. Stick to the usual precautions you would in any large city.

  • Travel with friends

Travelling with friends can help to ensure your safety when travelling in Hackney. If you’re unable to travel with a companion, always let a flatmate or friend know where you are and what time you’re expected to return home.

  • Avoid having your smartphone in hand

While areas like Dalston are vibrant and full of character, phone thefts can be an issue, especially when devices are used openly in public. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep your smartphone secure—avoid using it while walking near roads or in crowded areas.

  • Stay alert

Don’t wear headphones or walk along looking at your phone. Stay alert and in control of your surroundings. Focus on your destination, and be aware of potential dangers along the way.
