Why Hackney Matters
Hackney has been central to Diane Abbott’s political journey and a community that has shaped her public life. Her connection began through the borough’s tradition of community activism and her deep engagement with local residents. Her presence in Hackney has also carried a wider significance for the borough’s Black communities, providing a visible example of Black political representation and helping to open doors into political spaces from which Black voices have historically been marginalised.
