A free screening of Frederick Wiseman’s incredible documentary
This event is in conjunction with the British Film Institute’s Frederick Wiseman season, a long overdue opportunity for UK audiences to explore the master’s oeuvre.
This screening will be a celebration of libraries! Wiseman has spent his entire career, over half a century, uncovering how the world works through portraits of institutions, usually ones functioning poorly and failing the citizens they serve. Ex Libris is a rare Wiseman “feel-good” film: it celebrates the joy that libraries can bring to their communities. In focusing on the New York Public Library, one of the largest and most well funded of its kind, the film captures a kind of utopian portrait of a public organisation. We’ll be watching the film in Dalston Library, and considering together what our local libraries mean to us and to what extent they’re being supported to serve their communities.
Refreshments will be provided.
