In a packed-out theatre in Hoxton Hall, 75 older residents joyfully wave their hennaed hands in the air in time to the Bhangra beat.

Vinay, founder of Bollyqueer, leads a seated Bollywood dance workshop, while those who are able get up on the dancefloor to try out their newly-learnt moves.

Others sit on tables, which line the edge of the dancefloor, sharing tasty Indian treats and catching up with friends over a cup of tea.

This is Strictly Hoxton: a free bi-monthly cabaret style event for local party-goers over the age of 55, organised by the Council and supported by Derwent Foundation.

Each Strictly event is hosted by drag queen MC Topsie Redfern and includes singing performances, dances, circus acts, lunch and snacks provided by a local business.

Strictly Hoxton’s aim is to celebrate different cultural events and to provide a regular space for older residents to meet, make new friends and boost wellbeing.

October’s event celebrated Diwali – the Hindu festival of lights. Most of those in attendance are part of Hackney Circle – a free membership community for Hackney residents over the age of 55 who are interested in creative and cultural events.

Member Elizabeth explains: “I have been going to most of the Hackney Circle activities. It gives me the chance to get out of the house to meet old friends and have a chat with them.

“The exercise workshops have been helping me manage the pains in my hips and joints.”

Yvonne says that Hackney Circle helps her feel connected to the community. She adds: “I come here to meet other people. Hackney consists of a wide-variety of people and if you come here you meet people from all backgrounds. It’s also good for hearing about things that are going on in the borough.”

The next Strictly Hoxton event will take place at Hoxton Hall on 16 December, from 12noon to 3pm, and will be the Christmas party.
