“My interest as a writer always lies in women’s experiences in a very candid, raw and truthful way,” says April Hope Miller, writer of ‘Flush’, an award-winning play coming to Arcola Theatre from 6 May to 6 June 2026.

She continues: “It all comes back to sisterhood and being really fascinated with these stories and how important they are to be told. There is no shortage of men’s opinions about basically everything. And I think it’s important to highlight women’s voices and women’s experiences.”

Set in a Shoreditch nightclub, ‘Flush’ unfolds in the women’s bathroom – a space where women do their make-up, divulge their innermost secrets and hand each other toilet roll.

April says: “The bathroom space allows for the exploration of so many different kinds of experiences for women in an environment that is unfiltered, because of the nature of that space, but also being on a night out and being inebriated.”

‘Flush’ follows 16 characters who intersect with each other and explores the dynamics of those specific relationships.

April continues: “While all this is going on we have our protagonist who experiences a trauma on the night. But the play, while it’s centred around her experience and draws all of these narratives together, isn’t just about that.

“It is more about how women are there for each other and boost each other up, but also sometimes tear each other down.”

The original soundtrack that accompanies the play is composed by electronic duo Jacana People, one of whom is April’s brother.

April says: “There’s so much to be said for theatre to be a fun and invigorating experience. That’s something that I’ve always wanted with this show – the idea that you’re coming on a night out with the girls, just by virtue of going to see it.

“Shoreditch and east London are those places where you can be on a night out with anyone. It is like the microcosm of everyone in the east – there’s an energy and vibe.”
