ROBYN TRAVIS
Author
Robyn Travis is an author, speaker and advocate for young people whose writing draws directly on his experiences growing up in Hackney during the postcode conflicts of the 1990s and early 2000s. Through his debut book, Mama Can’t Raise No Man he has fostered meaningful conversations around youth violence, masculinity and community.
Why Hackney Matters
For Robyn Travis, Hackney is home, childhood and community. He describes Dalston CLR James Library as “my childhood library”, making the Legacy Steps a recognition not only of his work as an author, but of the place that helped shape him.
Reflecting on the Legacy Steps, Robyn described it as the “first time I’ve been recognised” as an author. He expressed his gratitude for having his work and connection to Hackney recognised in his home, the experience had only motivated him to continue working hard.
Did You Know?
Robyn Travis continues to expand his work as an independent author and self-publisher. In just over a year, he has written four books, including Mama Can’t Raise No Man 2 and The Elephant in the Womb, alongside his first poetry collection, Meet Me at the Altar. With further book launches planned, Travis continues to build his literary career on his own terms and use his platform to encourage greater engagement with Black literature.
