Celebrating Black Theatre Histories: Chiaroscuro by Jackie Kay

  • Hackney Archives Dalston Square London, England, E8 3BQ United Kingdom (map)

Unfinished Histories will remount our successful staged reading of Jackie Kay's Chiaroscuro, the first Black lesbian play staged in Britain, and share it with a new audience.

The play was originally produced in 1986 by Theatre of Black Women, Britain's first Black women's theatre company, set up in 1982 by graduates of Rose Bruford College including Patricia Hilaire, Paulette Randall, who went on to become an acclaimed director, and Bernardine Evaristo, who has gone on to become a Booker prize-winning novelist. Jackie Kay is now the Makar - or poet laureate - of Scotland.

Theatre of Black Women was based in Dalston on Kingsland High Road, so it is particularly appropriate to stage the reading down the road at Hackney Archives. Directed by Olusola Oyeleye, the play draws on poetry, dance, improvised music, as well as naturalistic scenes, in an innovative exploration of four Black women's exploration of as four women explore and discover who they are, giving voice to their desire, confronting external and internalised homophobia, racism and sexism.
